/A secret glance at him
quickened her pulse
a blush arose
she could not hide
An unexpected smile
he sent her way
she mistook it for romance
She fashioned a promise
from his casual gesture
poured longing
into his ordinary words
Yet no passion followed
no vows took shape
she realized the palace
she dreamed to enter
was a mirage
